SQL Server not started.

Modified on Thu, Apr 2, 2015 at 8:47 AM

Sometimes one or more of the Microsoft SQL Server services do not start when the File server boots up. To start the services, perform the following steps:

1. Open Services by selecting Start->Administrative Tools->Services.

2. Ensure the services are sorted by name, and scroll down to SQL. There will be several services that start with SQL. The two main services we want to check are SQL Server and SQL Server agent. The status for these should both be 'Started', and the startup type should be 'Automatic' or 'Automatic (Delayed Start)'. If not we will need to correct this.

3. To start the services, right click on the service and select 'Properties'.

4. To ensure the startup type is either 'Automatic' or 'Automatic (Delayed Start)' by selecting the appropriate option from the dropdown box. Then click apply. Then click 'Start' to start the service. If necessary, repeat the last two steps for 'SQL Server Agent' as well.
